It's always beneficial to make homemade pizza crust (dough) rather than buying it. This ensures ingredient and quality control. Prepare a high fiber organic food recipe.

As stated above, in today's market, it's no more trouble to purchase organic food ingredients than it is over-processed food that was raised using pesticides. The price tags will be a bit higher, but that's the price to pay to avoid possibly consuming pesticides in the plant ingredients and a variety of hormones in some of the toppings.

This recipe will produce a thick, soft crust, making it ideal for making cheese-stuffed borders which many people prefer.

Eat Fiber for a Healthy Digestive System

This recipe can be prepared organic or not. Chef's choice. Either way, the added fiber is a great supplement to the modern diet which is sorely lacking in modern diets that revolve around fast food restaurants. The American Dietetic Association recommends an intake of 20 grams to 35 grams of fiber per day but most people fall short of that.

Pizza Crust Ingredient List

These proportions will make one large crust. It's easy to double it to keep half in plastic wrap in the refrigerator for the next day.

  • 1 package Fleischman RapidRise yeast
  • 1 1/2 cup warm water
  • 3 1/2 cup Organic whole wheat flour
  • 1 t olive oil
  • 1/4 c wheat bran (provides additional fiber)
  • 4 t wheat gluten (increases protein and improves rise)

Mix the Pizza Dough

  1. Pour the warm water in a large plastic or glass mixing bowl.
  2. Stir the yeast into the water.
  3. Add the olive oil.
  4. Stir in 1 cup of flour, about 1/4 cup at a time.
  5. Stir in the wheat bran and gluten.
  6. Mix in flour 1/4 cup at a time until it's too stiff to work.

Time for Kneading and Prepare for Baking

Turn the dough ball out onto a floured surface and begin kneading it, adding fresh flour as required. Continue kneading until it's no longer sticky. Re-flour the surface and use a rolling pin to roll the dough out to the size of a large pizza.

Pre-heat the oven to to 500 degrees.

Place the dough on an oiled or floured pizza pan. Crimp up the edges a bit to contain the sauce, cheese, etc. If cheese-stuffed borders are desired, this is the time to do it. Add the sauce and desired toppings.

Place in the oven and bake. Baking time may vary, but it shouldn't be less than 18 minutes and no longer than 25. Start checking at 18.
